FIVE ways we use eggshells on our mini farm…

- Eggshells are an amazing fertilizer for your garden and double as a pest repellant! Just break up your eggshells into very small pieces and scatter them around the base of your plants. Those pesky insects hate crawling over the sharp edges, and this can prevent them from reaching your plants!
- To give your tomatoes an extra boost in calcium, place eggshells under your tomato plants when you plant them. You can also do this with broccoli, cabbage, peppers, and squash!
- Composting eggshells is another way we save money on our homestead! Eggshells add to the compostable matter and help it thrive! We use compost in our garden and save money by not having to purchase compost…and we know what’s in it!
- When starting your seedlings use eggshells for pots! Fill the eggshell about halfway with dirt and then plant your seeds in the shell. Place the shells back into the carton they came from until you are ready to transplant into the ground. Put the plant and shell it’s growing in right in the ground! The eggshell will finally break and provide the plant with calcium and other nutrients for the plant!
- Adding crushed eggshells into you chicken feed it very beneficial! Laying hens need a calcium boost and this is the best (and free) way to give them calcium! Just don’t give them the eggshells in big pieces, you don’t want to encourage them to break their eggs BEFORE you collect them!
We like to utilize everything we can on our mini farm – it saves us money, is more eco-friendly, and natural!
Have you “used “recycled eggshells before? How did you use them?
