A few things I have learned on our wellness journey…
Clean eating is the ONLY way to eat! Processed foods were slowly killing us! We are on the beginning of a path to healthier eating – extremely limiting gluten with intentions to eliminate it all together, cutting out processed sugar, limiting dairy products, eating more fresh vegetables and no processed meats (like lunchmeat), and adding good fats like grass fed butter, salmon, coconut oil, and I am also going to be making some “bone broth” to add to our healthy gut diet. What you feed your body has a direct correlation to your emotional health!!! Your gut health and your brain health are connected! An unhealthy gut may be a factor contributing to depression, ADHD, Anxiety, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and more! Gut health and a healthy immune system should be our tops goals!
Always keep your body systems at their peak, especially your Immune System! Having an immune system that STAYS above the wellness line makes for a much healthier winter! We have a daily wellness routine of all natural supplements and essential oils that hasn’t failed us in 4 years!

All the toxins!!! I never realized how many poisons we were putting in and on our bodies daily! Shampoo, laundry detergent, make-up, skin care products, cleaning products and so much more are full of chemicals that are cancer causing! We now use all natural products in place of all of these!
Kombucha is a natural probiotic! There are so many health benefits you get from drinking fermented tea – a healthier gut is so important, so that is the main reason I have started brewing my own Kombucha! I’ll be adding my recipe here soon!
There is so much more that I could add to this list but this is a great start! I’m so thankful for the journey we are on – we are not spring chickens anymore and I am positive that these 5 things will allow us to hang out on this earth a little longer than we would have had we stayed on the unhealthy path we were following – God willing!

Since we are new to chicken “farming”, we wanted to incorporate our love of essential oils in our poultry care! We knew that Lemon Essential Oil is awesome for its cleaning properties and it is all natural, so we decided to use it to deodorize our chicken coop!
This spray works great, is safe for our chickens, and best of all it is 100% chemical free!
- Using a 16 ounce spray bottle – glass is best – fill 1/2 way with white vinegar
- add 25 drops of Lemon Essential Oil – you can buy it here – swirling the bottle to mix
- Fill the rest of the bottle with water
We clean our nesting boxes, roosting bars, and for general coop clean up !

Are you worn out from lugging around kids, strollers, diaper bags? Did you have a hard day at the office and need a little tension relief? Spend too much time out in the garden? Believe me, I know exactly how you feel!
When we first started using essential oils (EO) I quickly collected a lot of “empty” bottles. An oily friend of mine gave me the best tip ever! My friend, who had been using essential oils much longer than I had, explained to me that even though the bottle looks empty, it’s really not. It still has a drop or two of precious oil left in it. All you need is a mason jar, and some epsom salt she told me.
I had no idea what she was going to tell me to do with these bottles! It’s really so simple, and makes such good sense! All you do is put some epsom salt in the mason jar, I usually fill it up about halfway, drop in any empty EO bottles that you have – yes, you can mix and match them – shake the bottle a little bit to get the salt inside the “empties”, then fill it almost to the top leaving a little room so you can shake the bottle again after the lid is on.
The salt will pull out any oil that is left in the bottle leaving you with oil infused bath salts! Since I like mine “use specific”, I put all of my supporting oil bottles together – Lavender, Cedarwood, and Roman Chamomile for a restful night; Peace & Calming, Stress Away, and Ylang Ylang for a calming, relaxing bath; PanAway, Wintergreen, and Cypress for those joints, muscles, and bones that are “screaming”! You get the idea.
So, when you start your collection of “empties”, save them! You’ll thank me later 😉
As we get deeper into our health and wellness journey, we are finding more ways to incorporate new things into our bodies! Kombucha is known for its health benefits, mainly for digestive support, but it has many different health benefits.
I spent the afternoon with two of my friends, both of whom embrace the wellness lifestyle like we do! Sheri, from Oily Organic Mama, showed me and our friend Kathy how to “grow” Kombucha! It definitely is an acquired taste…which I know I will learn to love! She sent us both home with a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), so I am now in the process of brewing my own batch!
I finally got to start on our outside “nightlight”! My good friend Katrina gave me this old chandelier so I am re-purposing it for our backyard at the homestead. I am still in the process of getting it finished, but I am so excited about it that I had to share the progress so far! I’ll be updating more when I get it done!
Hubby and I finished our outside chandelier last night! I am in love with it and plan to do a couple more!
It was so easy! First we hot glued the solar light to the place where the light bulb would have gone on the chandelier (save the posts that came with the lights, you can use them to replace any broken ones that are already in the ground!)
Then just put the base of the light on the hot glue/rim of the chandelier and voila !!!! You are done ! I let it dry/harden for a few minutes then put the light part on the clear “shade” part that we had glued on the chandelier. I LOVE how it turned out !
Here are just a couple photos of our “Hen Resort” at night 🙂 We have lights around our patio (the “people part” of our yard), our new chandelier hanging on a shepherds hook, and lights around the chicken coop/pen !
How To Make Homemade Mouthwash
- 20 oz. of Purified or Distilled Water
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- 25 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
- 20 ounce glass bottle (essential oils can degrade plastic)
Put the baking soda in the bottom of the bottle to “soak up” the oils when you put them in…it’s a known fact that oil and water don’t mix, add the essential oils to the baking soda, add the water and shake. Done! Easy right? 30 seconds tops!
I add the Young Living essential oils to the baking soda before I add the water because the baking soda helps to keep the oils and water from separating (it’ll still happen a little bit).
You may want to adjust the ratios of essential oils. Thieves Oil Blend has some cinnamon flavor (which I love) but some people may enjoy peppermint more – feel free to use the Thieves Essential Oil instead of the Peppermint. You may also like it the flavor to be stronger or weaker so feel free to use a drop more or a drop less per your taste buds.

Important consideration: Tap water has chlorine, mercury, fluoride, nitrates, and may even contain some carcinogens. I want to avoid all of that so I use distilled or purified instead.
